More last minute gift ideas (aka: things I’ve bought and loved)

We all know by now that I hate gift registries, preferring instead the challenge of finding the right gift: something really useful that the recipient never realized they needed, but then they got it and used the heck out of it.

So, I thought I’d share the things I’ve bought and loved. I’ve bought everything on this post myself. With actual money. Because I’ve been a one hit wonder lately (all baby, all the time), I’m purposely leaving out things that are specifically baby-related, though all of these have some baby considerations (of course).

Eye-Fi Connect X2 4 GB Class 6 SDHC Wireless Flash Memory Card EYE-FI-4CN

I bought this on Woot for less than the current Amazon price, but oh, how I love this card. I tended to not break out my “big camera” because I hated having to download the pics, decide whether to futz with them, upload them to someplace online and then finally be able to share them. No, thanks. With this card, though, all the pics I take on my camera are sync’d up to my iPhone. People, this is amazing! They also sync to my laptop when I fire up the Eye-fi program and I’ve opted to have only select images upload to Flickr.

OtterBox Universal Defender Case for iPhone 4

I’m a phone dropper. After two years, my poor Blackberry was dinged and scratched and lucky to be alive (and honestly, was barely functioning). Given the relative sensitivity of iPhones to things like being hurled from my admittedly low distance from the ground onto a sidewalk or hardwood floor, I was looking for a very protective case, sleekness be damned.

This is it. My kid has puked all over the screen (note: I used to think people who handed their expensive iPhones to their kids were crazy. Then I had a kid) and not a drop got on the phone. (Me, that’s another story.) I’ve dropped it at least twice and it’s suffered no damage.

We liked it so much we bought one for my husband’s iPhone too – in blue so we could discern between them – and then switched. I have the blue and it’s really loud, something to keep in mind. Still, worth every penny (and I paid more than the Amazon price for my first case).

Skip Hop Studio Diaper Tote Bag in Chocolate

I love this bag and I barely even used it as a diaper bag. It’s great to lug my big camera, fits my laptop with room to spare, and can do all that while holding five diapers, a pack of wipes, all my makeup (I’m one of those annoying people who puts makeup on in the car, although generally not while driving), a spare power cord, and the health of my spine (because lugging all that crap might have something to do with the neck and back pain from which I suffer.

It also has these hanging clip things that let you attach it to stroller handles. They’re a pain to futz with, but having my bag easily accessible and not taking up valuable stroller storage space is totally worth it.

Oh, and the side pockets intended for bottles do a great job holding water bottles or even drink cups from Starbucks or food joints and they stay upright. Not that I’d know….

Okay, perhaps next I’ll post a list of things I’m lusting after.
